PGA Golf Professional

Tony Troncale, PGA Golf Professional, Swenson Park Golf Course

Tony Troncale has been around sports his entire life.

Athletics run in the Troncale family. Tony's sure that he was born in the gym.  His father, Anthony Troncale, was an Athletic Director and a Varsity Basketball and Baseball Head Coach after a brief professional baseball career. Tony's memories of a young boy focus on being at the gym with his dad's team, watching and listening as he coached, and in later years, assisting with his dad.

Tony played several sports while growing up. While in high school, he focused on basketball and was voted a High School All American. He was also voted into his high school's Hall of Fame as he broke and still holds several school records. His introduction to golf came during the off-season with his dad and friends playing golf and spending time at the driving range. At that time, playing competitive golf was the farthest thing from his mind.

While playing college basketball, the Head Coach was also the Assistant Golf Coach. Once, while on a basketball trip, the coach and Tony played nine holes. After basketball season was over, the coach convinced him to play golf as well. Following a golf and basketball career in college, as a four-year letterman in both sports, Tony played in a few amateur golf events with some success and was encouraged to turn pro. In 1984, Tony moved to Stockton and soon after became an Assistant Golf Professional. In January 1989, Tony received the honor of becoming a Class "A" PGA Golf Professional.

Tony has a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Point Loma University in San Diego. His teaching experience and employment history includes both public and private golf courses in the greater Stockton area including Stockton Country Club, Discovery Bay Country Club, The Reserve at Spanos Park, and Swenson Park Golf Course. With almost twenty years of golf teaching experience, Tony has decided that one way of giving back to golf is to dedicate his time to becoming a full-time instructor of the game. "After all, I became a golf professional because of my ability to play and teach the game of golf," Troncale says. And, in an interview with San Joaquin Sports Talk, Troncale stated that he feels that his dad blessed him with the gift of teaching and coaching and he feels that it is his specialty that he can pass along what he has learned to others.

As a PGA Professional, Tony must participate in the PGA Professional Development Program to maintain his Class A status. Tony attends Teacher/Player Development Programs regularly with such notable instructors as Hank Haney, David Ledbetter, and Jim McLean. Troncale views continuing education imperative as a golf instructor to ensure he is providing up-to-date, state of the art, teaching techniques to his students. He is dedicated to encouraging growth of the game by introducing golf to new students and coaching experienced and advanced golfers to improve their game.

Tony is currently the PGA Teaching Professional for the City of Stockton Golf Courses. When Tony started this position, there was no formal instruction program. He fully developed and implemented several golf programs for all skill levels by developing solid group programs and offering individual lessons. The Stockton community is embracing the teaching environment that Tony has created. And, as a professional recognition, Tony Troncale was selected as one of the Top 25 Golf Instructors in the 2004 Northern California Golf Guide.
